Contents page (Kerrang!)

Layout
This is a contents for Kerrang!, this contents page contains more images than other contents pages that i have researched. each image on this page has a number, and this number leads off to a certain page or article. the centre dominant image is a large image of a DJ, I like the way the way the designer has designed this page with smaller images based around the large centre dominant image. I would like to take this idea of images to describe my pages. Also there is a small description about the magazine in the top left hand corner. this would be a great feature to add into my magazine.

Masthead:
The mast head on the contents page is completely different to the one on the front cover. It's a lot smaller and is on the opposite side to the front cover. I like this effect as it gives the effect that this magazine has no rules and doesn't follow a specific guidelines.

Colour scheme:
Colour i think is the downfall to this contents page. It's dull, there isn't a lot of colour introduced into this page and as my magazine is all about bright neon colours i don't think this contents page would work for me.

Font:
the font used on this contents page is a normal everyday font. however this font has a catch, and thats that every letter has a wider gap between the other letters. is looks like the letters have been stretched.

Size:
size is a key factor in this contents page. the size of the font, the size of the pictures the size of everything. the sizes used on this contents page i think is perfect. Images are the key thing, they tell the story and save loads of endless writing. all the other components seem to fit around these images, which implies that the magazine is set to a lazy audience.

A day in the life of?

The typical reader for my music magazine is a male in his late teens to mid twenties. (17-24)

I am a male student in my second year of sixth form. As iI am in full time education, I am in study for at least 5 days a week. But for the weekend it's a different story. I live for the rush you get on the friday and saturday nights out. the clubbing around my area is top notch. This allows me to put all the bad things this week behind me, and party out the weekend like it was the last weekend of my life. I buy the MixMag magazine every month. I really enjoy this magazine as it normally has a list of the best clubs in the country and I aim to go to one of these every weekend. I have a part time job working at the local supermarket. I work 12 hours a week and fit them around my study hours.

Masthead analysis

Mixmag Masthead

Like the analysis i done for the Kerrang! magazine I Particularly liked this masthead from the mixmag magazine because of it is so basic, yet very effective. i like the font used in this one it is really bold and easy to read. the font used also shows innocents its a type bubble font. straight from seeing this font on the magazine front cover you know that this is not a heavy hardcore rock magazine. this is an effect i would like to include into mine as my magazine is aimed at 15-24 year-olds, i think rough, untidy writing would almost put off the buyer.

Masthead analysis

kerrang! masthead

Kerrang!'s masthead has been used to great effect and reflects on his audience. Kerrang! is a rock magazine and the masthead shows this by the shagginess of the letters and how each letter has little chips in them. This reflects and shows that rock music is really loud and is breaking the letters. There are also white lines going through the masthead, all of these lines come out of certain points. I think this looks almost like beams of lights coming out of the letters, just like stage lights on a rock concert.
these white lines are something i would like to considering in my masthead. my magazine is a clubbing magazine and these lines could also be beams of light flashing around on to the dance floor. to improve this masthead for my design i would have the white lines different colours. just like different coloured lighting bouncing off the walls in clubs i would have different coloured lines bouncing of the masthead

Mood-board

My Mood-board!

This is the mood-board I created for my music magazine. It is aimed at the people who will read my magazine. from the creation of this mood board it has given me some great ideas for the final product of my magazine.

Researching the Market

Mixmag,

Mixmag is a British dance music and clubbing magazine. I especially chose this magazine, as it is my biggest rival as my magazine has a clubbing side to it. I like the way this magazine uses erotic neon colours, which gives it that clubbing feel. This is someone thing I will try to use in my magazine. Like Kerrang! The masthead has the same colour format, with bold bright white text. This stands out and makes it clear what the masthead is. This is defiantly something I would introduce to my magazine. Another thing that drawed me towards this magazine is that there is no centre dominate image. The centre image is text. I think this works well as it is a clubbing magazine and with clubbing there is strong bright neon lights and the text is in them colours. So therefore it’s a image of lights.

Mixmag published its first issue on February 1st, 1983. This was a 16 page-black and white magazine published by ‘disco mix club’ which was a DJ mailout service. Mixmag was later sold to EMAP Ltd, In the mid- 1990s before being brought by development hell. Development hell also own the music magazine, ‘the word.’

Font size and Colour: the font used in Mixmag for the main cover line I think its genius. I really like it and would like to include some font of this time in my magazine as I think it is ideal for my idea. I also love the colour scheme how it is all based around this baby blue. Which I think really works and shows and gives the reader the feel of the clubbing scene.

Unlike the brand ‘Kerrang!’ the Brand name ‘Mixmag’ doesn’t have its own Television show or radio station. But however it does have a website which is called http://www.mixmag.net

Price: £3.95, like I said from the other magazine research Kerrang! I thought £4 was a reasonable price for a monthly magazine. This is 5p of my estimate so my price tag will be along the same lines.

Researching the Market

Kerrang!

Kerrang! is a rock music magazine; the style of this magazine is mainstream adult orientated rock. I chose this magazine because I thought it would be a big influence on my magazine. The reason for this is that I love the way Kerrang! Is set out. I like the fact that the masthead is hidden behind the main picture yet you can still read it. I also like the effect that the produces of this magazine give away free gifts. This is something I would like to add into my own magazine, as I think this would increase sales.

Kerrang! First commence publication on June 7th 1981, and at this time was edited by Geoff Barton. AC/DC appeared on Kerrang!’s first front cover. The Kerrang! Magazine was originally owned by United Newspapers who then sold it onto EMAP in 1991.

Font size and colour: The font used in the Kerrang! Magazine inflicts power onto the reader. It does this through the colours used, for example the white font. The white font with the black outlines allows the words ‘enter Shakari’ to really stand out and therefore the first thing the viewer would see would be them words. This would really engage the reader and could be a good sales tool. I also like the fact that it is a rock magazine so they use colours like blacks, reds, etc. these colours will go well in my magazine as they a bold dark colours and as my magazine is to do with clubbing it is dark in clubs.

The Brand name ‘Kerrang!’ also use there own website which is called http://www.kerrang.com, not only this they also have there own television show called Kerrang! TV and a radio station Kerrang radio 105.2.

Price: £2.20, it is a reasonable price for a weekly magazine. However mine is a monthly magazine so mine will be more around the £4 mark.

PRE-LIM Task

My Pre-Lim Task

This is my preliminary task of a school magazine front cover. My front cover was aimed at the sixth formers, and in this addition it is aimed at a male audience. I used plugs that were related to the sixth form life.

Introduction

Hi, my names is James Couchman and my music magazine genre is all about Dubstep, this is an introduction to my magazine. Which is called Music Revolution, or MR.

The target audience would be aimed at a niche market is aged between 17 to 30 years old. Also the dominant gender is male.

The aim of my magazine, is to introduce the world to Dubstep. From my Knowledge there are only one or two magazines that specializes in the genre Dubstep, and i aim for my magazine to beat these two competitors .

The price of my magazine would be £3.00 as it is a monthly magazine.
